Description of the Program

The student is introduced to basic medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and medical abbreviations. The student learns and demonstrates the ability to perform clinical skills, including those associated with aseptic technique, structure of heart, EKG and Phlebotomy. This comprehensive has 25% of the course work spent in our laboratory. The course prepares students to function as EKG, and Phlebotomy Technicians and to take the National Healthcare Association - Certified Electrocardiograph Examination (CET) and Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT). Students will practice with equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices. Textbooks and materials are provided.

Description of Unique Features Of The Program:

The students will be taught collection procedures to ensure quality collection of blood specimens, skin puncture, isolation techniques, micro-collection techniques on newborns, capillary blood gases, intensive care blood specimens, pediatric blood collection techniques, and collection of specimen for intravenous glucose tolerance tests. Upon completion of the training the student will take the examination to become a certified Phlebotomist enabling them to work in a variety of clinical settings such as hospitals, clinical laboratories, private office settings, and blood donor centers.
